Personally, I've found these older publications very good for propping up my telly...

Brother vs Sister Committee Mtg
by ItsJustMe inam i reading the elders manual correctly?
a husband is expected to be involved in his wife's committmee meeting but there is no mention of a wife being involved in the husband's.
is this what our experiences were like?

Missie Eff
Yup ItsJustMe same expereince!
I was not able to sit in on my husband's Judicial Committee but he was able to sit in on mine. I did have a problem with this.
But, I had more of a problem with the fact that I had been dragged in there little over 3 months pregnant. These men (two of whom are virgins, let alone "family" men) expected to be able to judge my frame of mind to accertain whether or not I was repentant. My hormones and emotions, as you can imagine, were all over the place!
Add to that - the fact that my husband at the time was drinking, smoking, going to night clubs - and had been counselled several times on this. I hadn't. I behaved myself and stayed in. And yet, I was tarred with the same brush. His behaviour indicated to them that he wasn't repentant and so they chucked me out too for good measure.
Bloody glad they did really. My son won't grow up as brain dead as I did!
Elders don't like women with brains, especially if they are connected to the mouth. Don't you agree?

Demons & Invisible Forces
by Celtic indid any of you have disproportionate fears of demons, and if you are able to, what was your experience in your emotions with these strong fears?
how did knowledge at such a young age affect you with the detailed graphic descriptions given my the published litureture?
were there any publications which freaked you in any way?
-
Missie Eff
Thank you for raising this topic, Celtic, however difficult it may be for others to approach.
F****d up by tales of demons and evil forces? Too right!
One of my most vivid fears was instilled by tales I had heard of sisters being pinned down and raped by spirits. It scared the life out of me! I am sure that there must have been other sisters (and brothers!) who had heard the same tales and who were plagued by the same fears.
I remember one night, I related these fears to my husband (we were only just married). I went to sleep, safe in the knowledge that he was beside me but he stayed awake all night.
I am still afraid of being alone in the house at night...
I have a son. I will be careful not to instill such unecessary fears in him.

Positive Name For ExJWs...?
by ISP ini don't like the word apostate.......because it simply is not the case in so many cases.
i think the term 'truthseeker' would be better and quite annoying to jws who think they are!.
come on you truthseekers!.

I can go along with the thoughts of Simon and Celtic above. I have spent my entire life being compartmentalized - you had to tell everyone at school and then at work that you were a JW just so that they knew what you stood for and so that your behaviour would "reflect well on the Organisation" (ie. you wouldn't get up to anything naughty!).
I like to think of myself now as an individual with a unique background and understanding of life. I am a member of many social groups: family, college, local community, world community and a support network such as this but I am also enjoying the freedom of no longer having a label.
Going from being compartmentalized as a Jehovah's Witness to being put into the Ex-Jehovah's Witness catagory is to leave one box only to be put in another.
I like the sentiment behind your suggestion but here's to freeeeeeeeedom!

Funnily enough, my Mother voiced the very same idea to me this week. There are obviously a few other people coming to exactly the same conclusion independantly.
Oh dear, there may be trouble ahead...

Child abuse - Jehovah, Jesus, HS, and GB
by Norm inthere is one aspect that seems to be missing totally from the subject of child abuse.. the watchtower has up through the years told us time and time again how those 4, jehovah, jesus, holy spirit and the gb has appointed elders as gifts to the congregations of jehovah's witnesses.. back in the fifties, the watchtower society was very honest and open about who really appointed the watchtower elders:.
*** jv 54 5 proclaiming the lord's return (1870-1914) ***.
back then, it was customary for the congregations to vote each year for those who would preside among them.

Very thought provoking.
Something related that always puzzled me: when members of other churches have divine inspirations or messages from above, we were told that the only source for these must be from the evil spirit world as the Holy Spirit stopped talking to prophets a long time ago.
So where do the Society's divine inspriations come from? No one has ever really given me an answer. I was told that I was not to ask questions like this.
If there really is a doubt, this would therefore add another dimension to your argument.

What Path To Understanding?
by Undecided ini have been looking for answers to life and death as has many of you.
i was wondering what is the best avenue to take.
do you just rely on intelligence, experience, some holy book, what others tell you, some miraculous heavenly voice, a dream, or are we up a creek without a paddle?.

Missie Eff
Hi, Undecided.
I was very interested to read your comments as I guess that I too am at that point at the moment. Being born into the JW faith and raised in it, I left when I was 24. Three years later and I am still very confused.
I'm not that sure anymore whether or not there is an absolute route to truth. I am convinced that there is a God as I have a young son and the experience of pregnancy, birth and motherhood cannot be explained any other way.
But, I don't know whether I can trust an interpretation of an interpretation of an interpretation etc. of the bible. Even if I could talk to the men who wrote it, how could I be sure that they were able to communicate effectively what they saw in their minds. Language, by its very human nature, can be falible.
So, I'm going to keep on praying for now. I hope that the Almighty will approach me at some point. I feel reluctanct to trust other people at the moment, but something may happen to change my mind. You never know.
Good luck. Let us know how you get on.

Why do you think that "they" won't allow women to wear trousers to the meetings - even field service?
I was a JW for years and it baffled me why the sisters resorted to wearing leggins (a type of trouser) under their skirts on cold days. Why not just wear trousers - common sense told me that they would be both feminine and warm.
But no, this whole male dominence over female had to prevail. To have worn the trousers literally would have been seen as a usurption of authortity: a symbolic wearing of the trousers.
I have a real problem with men now. It has taken me a few years to actually like them again. Not all men are the same.

Had marvelous sex with my 19-year old lover right up until my son was born (in fact, it started my labour). My husband had just left and it was what I needed (I'm not recomending this course of action!).
Your baby is well contained and silent whilst inside. You wait until the precious bundle is out in the open. Sex? What sex? When?
